“The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming.” (Romans 10:8)
The apostle wants to say, don’t look to and from for Christ. Don’t Let your eye gaze out into space, or try to solve obscure, unending mysteries.
What does the Scripture say?
The word is near you! You have the word – the word of faith!
Yes, but Christ then?
Don’t you listen: You have the word! Seize the word then you have Christ!
You don’t need to ascend into heaven to bring him down, nor descend into the deep to bring him up from the dead. The word is near you. If you seize the word, then you seize Christ.
At the same moment the word about Christ gets room in your heart, Christ and the whole of his merit is yours. The faith has that great importance, and the word of Jesus has that great importance. “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.”
The faith saves in this way: God hands you a word, you seize the word, and at once the contents of the word are yours!
That was what Jesus would establish for us. He gave the help, in that way, to the person who sought him in her/his distress and need, while he walked down here.
He simply said a word, they believed the word, and immediately what the word promised occurred.
We should be content, like that, only with a word. Let us be content to walk in faith, without seeing.
