“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing for the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom.” (Genesis 3:6)
Here we are told, what it was that caused the sin of the woman. First, she saw that the tree was good for food – pleasing for the eye. There, the actual desire was aroused. Next, she found out that it was useful to eat of it, because it would enlighten the intellect. “She took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”
Terrible instant! She took – took some of the fruit the Lord the Almighty had forbidden them to touch! She took, - she ate – she gave her husband, and he ate. Now the fall had taken place. And what was the consequences of this?
“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.”
This was death. – The death the Lord God had foretold: “for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Now they run away from God and hide themselves from their Heavenly Father. The happiness, they had possessed in their life together with him, was over. The love towards God, the joy because of his presence, and the confidence in his word – everything had disappeared. The pure holy mind, - the image of God in intellect and heart was gone, - for them and the human race.
