“Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him.” Luke 15:22
What does Jesus want to tell us about the best robe, in this passage? It had to be the best because it was the most unworthy person who had to be hidden and dressed up. When the worst of sinners returns home, then the joy is greatest. We meet that truth in every part of God’s word.
Are you ´The worst of sinners`, Then, ´Christ Jesus will display his unlimited patience` in you also. 1. Tim. 1:15&16.
´When I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.` Ezekiel 16:63.
What feeling of deep shame and inexpressible happiness mustn’t have filled the prodigal son’s heart, when he was received by his father. He knew very well how deeply he had fallen, and how unworthy he was. But the father had the best robe ready for him, the most unworthy of all?
It is God’s greatest desire to cause sinners to be ashamed by giving them his forgiveness, exactly when they least of all expect it. Nothing is dearer to him, than to see the feeling of unworthiness and delight which characterize a heart of a sinner like that. A heart that in all its unworthiness, is being showered with the very greatest grace – and that, in all its uncleanness, is being dressed in the very best robe!
